When Jan Magnussen participated in the NASCAR race at Infineon Raceway in Sonoma - in his Phoenix Racing No.. 09 Chevrolet Impala Hendrickcars.com, he wrote himself not only into the Danish sports history as the first Dane in NASCAR, but he wrote himself into NASCAR history books as well.
In the results it is possible to see that Jan Magnussen's car with the beautiful 12th place resulted in $ 92,500 prize money. Jan's performance, which he ran from a starting position at number 32 until the aforementioned 12th space gave him the nomination "O'Reilly Auto Parts Position Improvement" for having advanced most places. Not only díd he advance the most places in the race, he even made most 'Quality Passes', which counts all overtaking made during green flag on cars in the top 15. Here he performed no less than 32 overtaking manouvres..
Jan Magnussen's car had a minor problem which meant that the car stalled at every pit stop. Because of the close fought battle for positions it meant that Jan constantly lost positions in the pits when the car was restarted. This meant that the lost positions had to be clawed back on the track and thus gave no less than 32 top 15 overtakings. No wonder that Jan Magnussen felt he was constantly in close duels.
We must again emphasize that there was no less than 32 cars on the lead lap at the finish and Jan Magnussen was the best rookie.
