15½ hours into the 24 hour race at Daytona the lead and possible victory disappeared for the Magnussen Camaro GT.R, when the gearbox destroyed itself. Jan Magnussen was on his way to the pit to take over the car that led the race with more than a lap, when it was pushed away from the pit and directly to the garage. Andrew Davis who drove the car at that time got problems with selecting 5th gear, and there was no other choice than head for the pits and a gearbox change. The repair took almost an hour in the garage and the possible victory for Jan Magnussen did yet again evaporate into the air, despite a great drive in the new car.

It is the 5th year in a row, that Jan Magnussen leads at Daytona, but must see the victory disappear due to repairs in the garage.

"It is pathetic!" a dejected Magnussen murmered when the car was stationary in the garage. "We have run a really great race, but once again the chance of victory ends with a lengthy repair in the garage. Already in my first stint I could feel that the gearshift wasn’t right and even though we took every precaution we couldn’t make it last."

Although the car is back on the track, any remote possibility of victory and the priced Rolex Daytona watch is gone. "If I’m not contacted by Tag Heuer any time soon with a sponsor contract, I don’t know what all this means? Apparently I’m not meant to wear a Rolex Daytona on my arm."
